MEDICATION LIST FOR BEES

 

Medications:

There are many different types of bee medication options and it can often be confusing which medication to use. The chart below provides basic information about the available medications and their uses. By no means are these directions on how to treat your bees, but rather just a guide to help you. Please read and follow the directions provided on the labels.

 

Medication Uses, Application, and Treatment period

 

Oxalic Acid

Varroa Mites

Solution Method: Trickle 5ml of solution (35g of Oxalic with 1L of 1:1 sugar water) directly onto each occupied bee with syringe.

Vaporizer Method: Following manufacturer’s instructions, place 1g powdered form into vaporizer and insert vaporizer into entrance of sealed hive. Apply heat until all Oxalic Acid has sublimated.

Spraying Package Bees: Spray Package with mixture of 35g Oxalic with 1L of 1:1 ratio sugar water.

Most effective early Spring or late Fall when there is little to no Brood in the hive.

Remove Honey Supers during treatment. Honey supers that come in contact with Oxalic during treatment cannot be harvested.

 

Api Life VAR

Varroa Mites

Break one wafer into 4 pieces and place on the corners of the brood nest. Apply 3 times every 7-10 days

30 day treatment. Temperatures must be between 64-95º

Supers can be installed after treatment but cannot be harvested for 30 days.

 

MiteAway Quick Strip/ Formic Acid  

Varroa Mites

Apply two strips near the edges of the brood box. Minimum of 6 frames of brood. Kills mites under the brood cap.

7 days. Daytime temperatures must be 10-32c º

Treatment can be done with honey supers on the hive. Strips are compostable.

 

ApiVar

Varroa Mites

Hang one strip per every 5 frames of brood. Typically 2 strips per hive

Not suitable during honey flow.

Supers can be installed 2 weeks after treatment.

 

Apistan

Varroa Mites

Hang 2 strips in the brood nest for 45 days

Anytime when the bees are able to move about the hive. Not suitable during a honey flow.

Supers can be installed after treatment. There are pockets of resistance to the active ingredient, so make sure the treatment is working

 

Checkmite

Varroa and Small Hive Beetle

For Varroa, hang 2 strips in the middle of the brood nest for 45 days.

For SHB, staple a half a strip to corrugated plastic and place it strip down on the back of the bottom board

Anytime when the bees are able to move about the hive. Not suitable during a honey flow.

Supers cannot be installed for 2 weeks after treatment. Pockets of resistance. Unavailable due to EPA registration.

 

Fumagilin B

Nosema

Mixed with sugar water and feed to the bees. Feed 2 gallons of medicated syrup per colony. One 2.0 gram bottle of Fumagilin is enough to medicate 12 colonies with two deep supers. Feed 2 gallons of medicated syrup per colony. Dissolve one half (1/2) rounded tablespoon of Fumagilin-B in about 2 oz. of water then mix this into 1 gallon of 2:1 sugar syrup

Cannot be feed during or right before honey flow.

Affective against N. apis and N. carenae

 

Menthol

Tracheal mites

50 grams of menthol is applied over the brood nest for 28 days.

Day time highs should be over 70 º

Supers cannot be added for 14 days after treatment
